This is Wilma. She is about 12-14, but it is hard to tell her age. Wilma came in as a stray and we don’t know how long she was on her own. She has some possible neurological issues such as dementia.
Did you know that dogs can get dementia like humans do? It can manifest as circling, excessive licking (especially odd things like the floor), agitated behavior, etc. Dementia tends to get worse as the sun starts to set and at night which is why nighttime symptoms are called sundowners.
Wilma presents with circling, not a fan of being picked up, whining, and mouthing. It does get worse as the sun starts to set. Her circling becomes faster and she has a hard time just relaxing. We are trying some different medicines to see if we can give her some relief. I wish she liked being pet and sitting with me, but she’s not a fan and I respect that. Wilma will let me scratch her neck sometimes but that’s as much as she can stand. She deserves to be loved and comfortable for how ever long we have her.
