Special Needs Adoptables A special needs dog can range anywhere from the elderly or
injured in need of daily medication to the disabled requiring special restrictions and to
the socially challenged in need of a patient and experienced owner.
The dogs here have a second chance at life because of Arizona Chihuahua Rescue. We
believe EVERY dog has an owner out there who will love them, care for them and accept
them just the way they are.
Please, when looking at these wonderful dogs, be sure to read their bio in depth to see
if you have the time, patience and know-how to take them into your home.
| | BABY
Hello my name is Baby and I am around 11 years old. I got that name because I sound like a baby when I cry. I came to the AZCR from a animal shelter. I was very skinny and over all in pretty bad shape.
I am a very loving lap dog and I am very good in the house. I am house trained and wire crate trained and love to go for walks. I love to be held and travel in the car.
I have had all my dental done and I only have 4 teeth left but I eat really good just ask my foster mom.
I do have two small cataracts, a few warts, and a extra large rib cage and some deformed toe nails and pads. The vet thinks is from very poor nutrition.
I am eating really good food with supplements and vitamins that my body really needed bad.
for more information on me contact my foster mom.

A big name for such a little boy... that's why they just call me Marco. I was a stray, picked up by a Maricopa County officer and then was temporarily living in the shelter. These nice folks at Az Chi Rescue came and got me out and now I'm living at my Foster Mom's home.
My foster mom said she was giving me this name because I am such a lover-boy (an expert in matters of the heart). It is true that I very much adore people laps, giving & getting love and giving kisses. They say I am around 8 years old, am probably a Chihuahua mix and I weigh around 6 lbs. I get along fine with other small dogs....I ride well in the travel crate in the car. I sleep in a kennel at night, no problem. I am potty trained and walk well on leash. My FM says you will not find a sweeter, more loving little guy than I......awww Mom.
My right eye has a cataract. The doctor said although I am gradually losing sight in that eye, I will probably do just fine as long as my people understand about blind dogs (ie: don't be moving the furniture around, take care with heights and some other stuff). My left eye is smaller than it should be, not in optimum health and I don't see much through it. The vet says it may need to be removed in the future but since it is not now troubling me there is nothing to do at this time.
Note from foster mom: At this time (June 2010) Marco still is seeing well enough to get around quite nicely. We have to be careful with heights (no jumping off the furniture). Marco will use the dog steps to get up onto the sofa or bed. He will then whine for me to take him off when he is ready to get down. Marco needs a low activity environment where someone is home much of the time.

Duke is a 2 y/o, ll lb. Chihuahua mix. He came to AZCR with hydrocehphalus (water on the brain), and had surgery to repair the condition. This left him with reduced sight (he is not blind) and a quiet, affectionate
personality. The only thing he gets vocal about is his dinner!
Here's what he has to say:
Hello, I'm the Duke, and I'm feeling pretty lucky because I've got a second chance at life!! That surgery on my head was a big deal and it took me a while to get well, but it doesn't bother me any more. My balance and circling problems are all in the past, and I really need some glasses to read the paper but I get around just fine without them, thank you very much! I'd love to have a home with a lap I can lie in a little each day, because I love to be held. I'd love to have a little friend I can cuddle up with the rest of the day, because the best part of my day is when I'm napping with a buddy. Well, maybe the best part of my day is when I'm out lying in the warm sun with my buddy!

I am house trained once you know my routine, and I need to have someone available to let me outside, as I don't know what a doggy door is and I probably cannot learn to use one. I like to go for short leash walks or just outside in the yard is OK, too. I'd really like to find a forever home that just wants a cuddle bug and a really easy keeper!
Note to our supporters and adopters:
Duke's surgery was extraordinarily expensive. We do not charge adopters the true cost of bringing these injured and ill dogs back to health; all fees are standard regardless of each dog's health expenses. If you would like to help with Duke and
so many others like him, please go to the Donations link and give whatever you can. Many dogs will benefit from your kindness!

| | FAWNY (TUCSON 800
RESCUE)
Hello my name is Fawny I am a chi/terrier mix
about 8 pounds and absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I was used as a breeder in the Tucson 800 I
was so afraid when I came here that I nipped a little when I
first met my foster mom.
After a bit though I realized she was A okay and I would run up to her slap her hand
with my paw and run under the bed and I would keep doing that again & again..I made
my foster mom laugh a lot!
I will take a while to warm up to you and will try to nip you until I know you better. It
will take time and patience but once you work through that tough exterior I will be the
most affection girl. Please email my foster mom if you have the patience and hopefully
training skills to help me transaction into my new home.

| | GHITA
This is Ghita, and she came from a Puppy Mill. She likely spent the first 8 years of her life in a cage producing puppies. As of July 2010 she has been in our rescue for over a year and has come a long way. She is a relatively spry 9 1/2 yr old, and weighs about 6 1/2 lbs. She has beautiful amber eyes and a calm disposition. She rarely barks.
She is most appreciative of her freedom. She loves to roll in the grass, gets excited over her food (& treats) and will jump up and down anticipating delivery of same. She is housetrained, but will also use a potty pad. She sleeps well overnight inside a wire kennel with the door open. She travels well, crated in the car for short distances.
While she may never be like a dog who was socialized when young, she does interact with and enjoys a good life with human beings. She does form close attachments with her caretakers and enjoys being pet and held, and will give you gentle licks. She is very timid at first but with time, patience and love she comes around and will seek you out.
Ghita has a collapsed disc, a malformed spine and her heart is enlarged. None of those issues are causing her any problem at this time. They could become problematic in the future...but they also may not.
She gets along well with other small dogs, but would be fine as the only dog. She is not pushy or demanding. Her ideal home would be with an adult (or adults) who are home most of the time and have the time to spend with her. She is a sweet girl who deserves a good life with a loving family.

| | JOEY
Hello everyone, my name is Joey and I was born in April of 2009, so I’m still a little clumsy. I’m not sure what I’m mixed with, but that’s not important, I’m 10 pounds of pure love. My foster parents are teaching me boundaries and not to step on the others, but I just want to be loved and it’s not my fault that all the others are in the way. I’m already potty trained, know how to sit and use the doggie door. I’m learning other basic commands like off, outside and go to bed. I’m very affectionate and love to be next to humans. When the humans are standing, I make myself comfy by sitting on their feet. I also like to rub my pretty head on my foster mom’s calf when she gets ready in the morning. I love to play the other dogs in the house and run around the backyard. There is one thing I have to share with you… I have Type A hemophilia. I’m not on any medication and my activity is only slightly restricted. I’ve already lost all my puppy teeth, a toe nail, been neutered and got my microchip and survived all of that!!! My foster parents have taken me to see the specialist and they will share all the pertinent information with you if you are interested in giving me a forever home. I am super duper awesome and I promise to make you so happy that you won’t even remember I have a little problem.

| | MATTIE
Hi there, I am Mattie, short for Matilda. I am a 10+ year old gal who despite my issues, is still active & loves to walk on a leash. My biggest challenge right now is that I am completely blind in my right eye and only have limited sight in the other. I have been seen by 2 eye specialists (in Phoenix & Tucson) and it is fairly certain I may have lost my sight due to a traumatic event to the eye, and not by a cataract. I do require prescription drops plus an over the counter ointment on a daily basis and probably will for the rest of my life. These will run approx $25-$30 month but be certain, I am DEFINITELY worth it!
I get around just fine & am an extremely happy girl once I get to know my surroundings & my owner. I am comfortable in a crate for the nighttime & will often spend my time napping in there as well. Right now my Foster Mom just takes the door off the crate so I can come & go as needed but if all you had for me was a dog bed, I think I'd like that too. As long as it's padded, I am a happy camper....we all know how these old bones like something comfy.
Please ask my Mom any other questions you may have - I am spayed, microchipped, up to date on my shots & still have a beautiful set of teeth. Mom says I have a very pleasant personality so won't you let me share it with you? Take care.....Mattie.

Polly wants a cracker, but Polly maybe had too many crackers and got a little round. Now Polly is losing weight and attempting to get her girlish figure back. Polly came from a breeding situation, where she spent all of her ten years. Polly is extremely wary of strangers, since she was never socialized. Once you do manage to get her in your arms, she does relax a bit and will give you some cute little kisses from her tongue hanging out of the side of her mouth. Her tongue hangs out, because she is missing some teeth, but the vet says he thinks the remaining teeth are surprisingly good for her age and situation. Polly's health is pretty good, also!
Polly will be a challenge, because of her wariness, but some challenges are so beyond worth it! Our organization has seen several examples of dogs from similar situations, who have blossomed into more of what they should have been all along--a beloved family member.
Polly still needs to lose a bit more weight and hopefully become a bit more comfortable around those she doesn't know. The only thing really stopping her from being adoptable is some vaccinating and a microchip, since she is already spayed. Are you seeking an extremely rewarding challenge?
Update: Pretty Polly has come a long way! She has lost tons of weight and is starting to become a lot less shy. She will still need some patience in becoming your friend, but once that happens, she just plain WANTS TO BE YOUR FRIEND!

Queso is approximately 10 years old. He is a
black, long-haired Chihuahua and is extremely sweet, affectionate and quiet. He is
about 6lbs and got his name when his foster mom found him running down the road
in her neighborhood. He was extremely dirty with skin problems, skinny, and terribly
frightened. She scooped him up out of the road and enticed him to eat and drink with a
piece of cheese…his new favorite. Queso does well with other dogs, but is more
interested in humans and LOVES to be carried around and cuddled. Due to his health, a
calmer environment is preferred - he has a heart murmur so will need to remain on
daily medicine (easy to administer and inexpensive) and an associated cough which is
also eased with medication. His skin and fur have shown excellent progress with his
special shampoo and is on the road to getting his coat back in-shape. Besides eating
cheese as a treat, Queso loves to chase birds when they land in the yard, sunbathe and
cuddle. He is also great on his leash and harness. Please consider making this sweet,
loving boy a new addition to your family.
